Holiday gadgets

With the countdown to our holiday just days away it was time this weekend to do some pre-holiday gadget shopping. This year I made just 2 purchases and both of them are practical.

The first is an IOMega USB hard drive to backup the complete content of 2 PCs to ensure that even if there are any disasters while we are away they is no loss of data. That is currently running like crazy as the data from my desktop is being transferred across.

The second is slightly more fun. Last year we took a TV on holiday so we didn’t miss FC Barcelona’s summer matches, as well as to provide something to do on those inevitable rainy days when we’ve also finished our entire holiday reading library. The TV didn’t last the holiday (I seem to remember it decided to stop working during Barcelona-Bayern Munich) and so was consigned to the scrap heap then and there. This year we apply a technological solution to the problem with the purchase of a WinTV Nova-T digital terrestrial TV stick – in other words a digital TV tuner on a USB stick for the laptop.

It is provided with a mini-aerial which worked surprisingly well and we’ll be able to connect it to a rooftop aerial anyway, so reception should be good. With a bit of luck it’s fair better than last year’s TV…
