Second Life versus Half Life

Second Life versus Half Life

Yesterday evening I made a point of watching a documentary about Second Life, because it’s one of those things I just don’t get. Why do people want to enter a virtual world in which they do all the mundane things that they do in the real world? What’s the point?

After watching it I still don’t know, but suspect that it is all hype. I can’t understand why you would want to go to a virtual disco, pick up someone and have virtual sex. What do they get out of it? What kind of joystick do they use? 🙂

Among the people they interviewed, none was able to convince me at all (ok, maybe because my Catalan is shakey too). One guy has set up a stock exchange as is trying to interest investors in it. What??? Has the world gone completely barking mad? Investors in what exactly?

Ultimately Second Life has the same problem that life itself has; if you don’t know what your first life is for do you really think it’ll be better in Second Life? Anyway, I thought it would be fun to compare Second Life with Half Life, below:

Second Life Half Life
A 3D world in which you can interact with other people A 3D world where you can shoot the hell out of everything in site
Create an ideal version of you, or a completely new identity Take on the world with the ideal super-hard you
Buy and sell virtual real estate using a cyber currency Shoot the hell out of anything that gets in your way
Helps you work out the meaning of life Helps you vent all the pent up anger that comes from working for an asshole

Half Life wins by a landslide.
